Dr. Mark Herceg is a neuropsychologist who specializes in brain injury, including sports related types. He spent over 20 years career evaluating and treating individuals with various neurological changes, illnesses or brain injuries across the life spectrum.
From 2015-17, he was the Commissioner of Mental Health for Westchester County, N.Y. During his tenure, he chaired a 28 member County Concussion Task Force that developed “10 Best Practices for Concussion Management." This was endorsed by the Brain Injury Association of America and New York State Chapter.
Dr. Herceg has helped shape concussion management practices and increase concussion education and awareness in Westchester County in both youth and high school sports. In 2015 he was awarded the Founders Aware by the Brain Injury Association of NY for his work with brain injured patients. In 2016, BIANYS appointed him co-chair of a new state wide concussion initiative. In 2013 he authored a chapter on concussion management in the book “In the Arena” published by the NY State Bar Association.
In 2016, he was one of 400 international experts invited to participate in the 5th International Consensus on Concussion Conference in Berlin. In 2017, he co-chaired the First Croatian Conference on Sports Related Brain Injuries in Split, Croatia. This conference was the first of its kind in Central/Eastern Europe and brought experts from 10 countries to present the latest science and evidenced based research.
Dr. Herceg holds a faculty appointment at New York Medical College and the Zucker School of Medicine, Hofstra University.
He is a Fellow of the Sports Neuropsychology Society and served on the Executive Board from 2016-20. He has been a concussion consultant to schools, youth sports, high school, collegiate and professional teams and athletes. Dr. Herceg is also a member of the International Neuropsychology Society, and the National Academy of Neuropsychology.
In addition to concussions and other more serious brain injuries, Dr. Herceg is experienced in neuropsychological changes due to stroke, dementia, Parkinson's, other neurological conditions, and learning issues such as ADHD. He works with individuals and families across the life span.
