A concussion is a condition that can temporarily change how brain cells work. It is usually the result of a blow to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly within the skull.
A variety of symptoms may develop, such as changes in sleep, physical, visual, cognitive, or emotional and behavioral functioning. Symptoms may resolve in 10-14 days; but for many people, it takes closer to 30 days. In some cases, symptoms may linger for a longer time.
Concussions can occur without loss of consciousness and do not show up as structural injuries on MRI or CT scans. A concussion does not have to be sports related. It can result from a fall, car accident or blow to the head.
